My change in outlook occured when i was sixteen years old, i decided that the christian faith would play a peripheral role in my life. I never could accept the teachings of the faith in the strict sense in which the very religious people do. I somehow felt compelled to seek out questions of conduct for myself and reject all forms of orthodoxy.
Is there a God? In my view, the question of God’s existence is unanswerable. I don't know for certain whether or not God exists, therefore I neither believe nor disbelieve in him. Theologians and adherrents to different faiths have tried to to prove, for millennia, that God exists. Whilst atheists have attempted to prove that God does not exist. Personally I am of the impression that neither side has convincingly succeeded at their task, hence my standpoint:
I am an agnostic, a thinker, and not a believer.

I had to go look up "agnostic"..lol.
I believe there is a God oh!.
Have you ever said a prayer (no matter how short), especially when you really needed something? I'm waiting for your answer :-)
@nilla, In all honesty I do find myself thanking God and saying the odd prayer. I guess it might be down to my ever so strict Catholic primary school...
In all honesty i view prayer as the mental equivalent of taking a placebo,you feel ok, but it amounts to nothing...
Hmmm..
I actually don't think its possible to say a prayer, and yet not believe in God or "a God". I think you believe in God subconsciously. Thats just my thought sha.
@nilla, i neither believe nor disbelieve in God, i just live......
:-D
Lol...I get that you just live!
I was trying to make a point by asking if you said a prayer at all.
For me saying a prayer meant you believed to some degree that your prayer could/would be answered. That belief could be a conscious one, an unconscious one or somewhere in between the two. Nothwithstanding the kind of belief, saying a prayer meant expecting it to be answered. So now the question would be, "who answers the prayer".
@nilla

I wrote the above in my reply to your initial comment. I find myself thanking God instinctively and the same goes for the odd prayer or two. By prayer i do not mean casting out demons and screaming for the holy ghost to come down and smite my enemies. What i mean is that i find myself uttering the words please God or i hope to God. I was raised as a Christian and these are the remants of a christian childhood.
Who answers the prayers? I think the first part of this comment answers your question.......
Why do you believe in god nilla ?
Dear, i don't believe in god. I believe in God....
Well just like you, I was raised as a Christian, and that was what I knew (i had to go to church etc). But with time (as i grew up), I began to really understand what being a Christian was (I'm still growing as a Christian though). I don't do it because its what is expected. I'm a Christian cos i believe. When I pray about something i have faith that it will come to pass. When i have faith and believe it, it usually does. But when i pray with a doubt in my mind it doesn't come to pass.
I don't know if i've answered the question well enough for you.
Yes you have anwered the question very well. I respect your views, and I admire people like yourself that have a strong belief but are wise enough not to judge those that view the world a little differently...
:-)
:-)
I respect your views too.
Anyways its time to call it a day.
Take care.
@nilla
Have a good one!!!
i'm with you on this one!
Interesting views - and you and mphahlele share so many of the same views, it's almost eerie!
I'm very much a believer but I don't think that being a believer and being a thinker are mutually exclusive (seems like that's kinda what you're saying in the last line). While I have made a conscious choice to believe, I am also constantly thinking about and questioning those beliefs (and other beliefs I have consciously chosen not to adopt). Whoops...not sure what I've just written made sense...
@daddy's girlIt kinda makes sense.....
I guess ;-)
Just kidding, I understand you.
It is rather eerie that mphaelele and i seem to agree on so many issues. I guess she is my kindred spirit.
@mphaelele
Good to have you on my team. As per usual. ;-)
i seriously questioned God while going through some things in my life, but i am trying to trust him again.
I absolutely agree with nilla. And it's fair enough that you're an Agnostic, Boorish. It makes far more sense to me than atheism. People get it twisted when they try to prove or disprove God's existence. What we call our relationship with God is a matter of "faith." It is just that; a belief, as opposed to a scientific fact. If it was a provable hypothesis, then everybody would be a Christian/Muslim, etc. right? Someone who believes in God has faith that he exists and that they have a relationship with him, not a first-hand knowledge that one gets by seeing something physically. I admire you for your bravery and honesty in writing this post. Loving this blog.
Has time changed this view? Do you believe in God now?
@meekaya
I so believe now.....
